For people with or at high risk for some eye conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the right combination of supplements may help slow or prevent these conditions. For example, the National Eye Institute released findings from its follow-up to the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), AREDS2, which followed 4203 participants for 5-6 years. The participants were 50-85 years old and had drusen (an early indicator of macular degeneration) in both eyes or large drusen in one eye with advanced AMD in the other eye. The findings from the AREDS2 study show that high doses of antioxidants vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E (400 IU), 25 mg of zinc, and ingredients lutein and zeaxanthin reduced the risk of vision loss from AMD in people with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in just one eye.

Eye Health Formulation Explained

Based upon these discoveries (and with the assumption that someone taking our Eye Health product is likely taking one of our multivitamin and mineral formulations), Cooper Complete Eye Health formulation contains 350 mg of vitamin C. When combined with the 150 mg in our Basic One multivitamin, the 500 mg level from the AREDS study is achieved. Similarly, Cooper Complete Eye Health contains 134 mg (200 IU) of natural vitamin E. When taken in conjunction with either Cooper Complete Original or Cooper Complete Basic One multivitamins, the 400 IU (268 mg) level from the AREDS2 study is achieved.

Eye Health formulation also contains 25 mg of zinc. Because this level of zinc reduces copper levels by approximately 2 mg, 2 mg of copper is also in the formulation.

We have always had lutein and zeaxanthin in our formulation, and the AREDS2 study confirmed that people who took a formula with lutein and zeaxanthin showed further improvement. We use 10 mg of FloraGlo® lutein (a natural form of lutein) and 2 mg of natural zeaxanthin to ensure the optimum quality of these key ingredients.
