Omega-3 is an essential nutrient, meaning the body can’t produce it on its own. If you’re not getting enough from your diet, you may find yourself reaching for a supplement, such as Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3.

A lot of work goes into making an omega-3 supplement that’s pure and potent. What part of the world does the fish oil in Cooper Complete’s Advanced Omega-3 come from and does the fish type matter?  The answers to those questions may leave you with a greater appreciation for the softgels than you ever imagined.

The Role of the Humboldt Current in Sourcing Omega-3

The highest quality omega-3 oil is sourced from anchovies and sardines caught in the Humboldt Current, off the coast of Peru and Chile. The cold, Antarctic water moves surface water offshore and causes an upwelling of deeper water which brings nutrients to the surface and increases biological productivity.

Why are anchovies and sardines preferred? The two are relatively short-lived fish that live far enough off the coast to not be less affected by pollutants. Both are also an oily fish, meaning they’re a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Other species such as mackerel, cod, tuna and squid are also used in omega-3 fish oil supplements.

How Fish Become Omega-3 Rich Fish Oil

Once the fish are caught, the protein is separated from the oil to produce unrefined primary source fish oil. The remaining protein or fish meal is sold to the fish farm industry as food.

The fish oil is then transported by ship to a processing facility. Marine Ingredients’ plant is located in Norway, where the oil is refined to higher concentrations and purified. This purification removes the “fishy” aftertaste often experienced with Omega 3 supplements. The liquid is then bottled in a vacuum-sealed system to ensure the freshest possible product. Cooper Complete’s customized blend of omega-3 is then formulated and encapsulated at a softgel facility in Florida.

Product quality is important, which is why Cooper Complete chose a cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) certified facility, meaning it meets or exceeds all domestic and international standards for purity and potency. The company also follows pharmaceutical protocol with full traceability, quality assurance and quality control. Each batch is even tested by a third party analytical lab to examine it for environmental contaminants.

Omega-3 Supplementation Recommendations

Cooper Clinic recommends consuming at least 1,000 mg of omega-3 daily. Seafood is the best natural source of omega-3, especially cold water fatty fish such as salmon, rainbow trout and anchovy. According to the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED), a nonprofit association that advocates getting adequate omega-3 levels and works to ensure quality omega-3 products on the market, men in the United States get about half of the omega-3 they need while women only consume about 40 percent of the proper amount.  If you’re not getting the recommended amount through diet alone, Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 is a great supplement option.

One serving (two softgels) provides a total of 1,200 mg the most important omega 3 fatty acids; eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) combined. It also provides a 60 percent concentration of the purest omega-3 fatty acids available, meaning you take fewer softgels but still reap the benefits.
