Researchers found a connection between vitamin D and childhood obesity, as the majority of the obese adolescents had vitamin D levels either deficient or insufficient.

Vitamin D and Childhood Obesity – Study Findings

100 percent of the girls and 91 percent of the boys had vitamin D levels either deficient or insufficient. Following the study, 43 subjects received one course of treatment of the recommended dose of vitamin D. Of the 43 subjects treated, only 28 percent of the subjects established a normal vitamin D level.

Researchers were not able to answer why the obese adolescents had vitamin D levels below normal, and difficulty in normalizing, but speculate there may be several reasons for the response:

  • Vitamin D may be sequestered in body fat and this likely is the major reason for difficulty in treating a deficiency or insufficiency.
  • It is possible that the association between obesity and low vitamin D status is indirect, arising from obese individuals having fewer outdoor activities than lean individuals, and therefore, less exposure to sun.
  • It is possible obese individuals do not consume enough foods that contain vitamin D.

A simple blood test will uncover if you or your children are deficient and need additional vitamin D. Check out a summary of the study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
