What It Is

Cooper Complete® 5 mg Prolonged Release Melatonin Supplement slowly delivers melatonin to the body over several hours to support healthy sleep throughout the night.†

How to Use:

As a dietary supplement, take one (1) tablet with water 20 minutes before bedtime or as directed by your health care professional. Each bottle contains 90 servings. Note: Due to supply chain constraints, this product has transitioned from a 60- to a 90-count bottle and from 3- to 5 mg of time-release melatonin.

How It Helps

Naturally produced in the pineal gland in response to changes in light exposure, melatonin helps promote healthy sleep patterns and antioxidant and immune activities.† At night or in the dark, the body’s melatonin production rises, but the amount produced declines from adolescence until it is virtually absent in elderly adults.  This 5 mg Melatonin Prolonged Release Supplement is recommended for adults who have difficulty with sleep. Specifically designed for those who fall asleep but awaken later and have difficulty returning to sleep, this extended-release melatonin supplement releases 5 mg of melatonin over six hours.†

The leading cause of fatigue is poor sleep. Sleep quantity and quality are to blame for most cases of fatigue. A joint consensus statement of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society published in 2015 recommends adults regularly sleep seven or more hours per night to promote optimal health. In reality, most American adults get between five and six hours of sleep per night, and some get even less. The amount of time you sleep at night is extremely important for feeling well-rested. Regularly sleeping fewer than seven hours per night is associated with many adverse health outcomes.

Lack of Sleep and Potential Negative Health Outcomes

  • Weight gain and obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Depression
  • Impaired immune function
  • Increased pain
  • Impaired performance
  • Increased errors
  • Great accident risk
  • Increased risk of death

In several human studies, researchers found that melatonin supplementation reduces the days needed to establish a regular sleep pattern. Travelers took melatonin on the day of travel (close to the target bedtime of the destination) and several days after that. Looking at several studies on the impact of melatonin and jet lag, melatonin seemed to provide benefits for about half the people studied.

As a dietary supplement, adults take one (1) Melatonin Prolonged Release tablet 20 minutes before bedtme with water, or as directed by their physician or health care professional.

Reviews of 5 mg Melatonin Prolonged Release Supplement

  1. Sleep is a rare commodity for me. So I was excited to try this. However, I’m still not staying asleep, despite exercise.

    • Thank you for your comments. Many factors affect our quality of sleep. As you noticed, regular exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality as long as it is not done within 1 hour of bedtime. Tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals prior to bedtime can interfere with a good night’s sleep. As can exposure to blue light from cell phones, computers, tablets, etc. Read about sleep hygiene tips here. Your physician or sleep medicine physician can develop a treatment plan to get better sleep

  2. I did not like this product. Extremely groggy and out of it the next day. Please try making a 1.5 mg dose for sensitive people. I will not be buying the 3 mg dose again.

12 Questions
Ask a Question
Q:

Can I take this product if I am also taking Coumadin or Warfarin?

A:

If you are taking Coumadin or Warfarin, we recommend consulting your doctor before adding any supplements to your diet.

Q:

Does Melatonin help sleep in the elderly?

A:

Several human studies have found that taking melatonin before bedtime reduces the time it takes to fall asleep in elderly individuals with insomnia. Improved sleep quality and morning alertness were also found. Unfortunately, the studies were short in duration.

Q:

I tend to keep a regular sleep schedule during the week and then stay up late on weekends. Would Melatonin help me get to sleep at my normal time on Sunday evening?

A:

Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS) is the scientific term for delayed weekend sleep pattern, or the difficulty that many people experience each Sunday night trying to get back onto their “weeknight” sleep schedule after staying up much later on Friday and Saturday night. One study showed the time taken to fall asleep was reduced from almost 60 minutes to a few seconds over 20 minutes.

Q:

Does Melatonin help jet lag?

A:

In several human studies, researchers found that melatonin supplementation reduces the number of days needed to establish a normal sleep pattern. Travelers took melatonin on the day of travel (close to the target bedtime of the destination) and for several days thereafter. Looking at several studies on the impact of melatonin and jet lag, melatonin seemed to provide benefit for about half the people.

Q:

Will Melatonin change my dreams?

A:

Possibly. Some individuals taking Melatonin report vivid dreams.

Q:

Will Melatonin make me drowsy or “hungover” the following day, like many prescription sleep aids?

A:

Unlike many prescription sleep aids, melatonin doesn’t increase drowsiness or have a “hangover” effect the following day. However, Melatonin should not be taken when fewer than 8 hours remain for sleep/rest.

Q:

Is there anyone who should not take Melatonin?

A:

Because melatonin is a hormone, testosterone and estrogen metabolism may be affected. For this same reason, women who are pregnant, or couples who are attempting to conceive should not take melatonin.

Diabetics, those with low blood pressure (naturally or through medications), and individuals taking warfarin or other blood-thinning medications should talk with their physician before taking melatonin.

Q:

Are Melatonin supplements recommended for Migraines?

A:

Yes. Here has been some research that taking Melatonin on nightly reduced migraine incidence.

Q:

What is Melatonin?

A:

Melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain, helps control sleep and wake cycles, essentially the internal clock in our body. Melatonin plays a role in regulating our natural wake-sleep cycle (circadian rhythm), with levels of melatonin increasing as exposure to light decreases, and decreasing with light exposure increases.

Q:

Are melatonin supplements safe to take with beta-blocker medications?

A:

Yes. Beta-blocker medications can contribute to difficulty sleeping because they suppress the body’s ability to make melatonin.

Q:

Is it true that melatonin is good for immune health?

A:

Melatonin has antioxidant properties and supports normal immune function by helping to maintain the activity of circulating natural killer cells.

Q:

How does Prolonged Release Melatonin Supplement work?

A:

Prolonged Release Melatonin slowly releases 3 mg pure melatonin into the body over several hours. Prolonged Release Melatonin is recommended for adults who fall asleep easily, but then have difficulty staying asleep.
