What It Is

Cooper Complete® Methyl Folate 5000 mcg (5 mg) supplement in the L-5-MTHF methylated form of folate that supports heart, brain, mood, and overall health.†

How to Use:

As a dietary supplement, take one (1) tablet daily or as directed by your health care professional. Each bottle contains 60 servings.

How It Helps

Methyl Folate Supplement 5000 mcg (5 mg) contains folic acid in the L-methylfolate (L-5-MTHF) form. Folate in the 5-MTHF form is the naturally occurring form found in cells. It is directly useable in the body without going through a conversion process. This form of folate does not mask B12 deficiency. Best known for its role in fetal development, folate isn’t just important for women of childbearing age.

Heart Health

Approximately 33 percent of Americans carry one copy of a common MTHFR gene mutation (C677T), and 11 percent of Americans carry two C677T mutations and have a 16 percent higher chance of developing coronary heart disease (CHD), a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply oxygen and blood to the heart, than those without gene mutations. These gene mutations also increase homocysteine levels, a blood marker risk factor for heart disease. Methyl Folate lowers homocysteine levels.†

Mood and Brain Health

Methyl Folate is vital for the production of neurotransmitters (serotonin, melatonin, dopamine, and epinephrine) involved in concentration, energy, sleep, hormones and mood stability.†  Folate helps improve brain mood naturally†. Low folate levels may prevent the brain from making enough neurotransmitters in people who are depressed. In some, but not all, studies, low folate levels have been linked to depression and poor response to antidepressants.† The 5-MTHF form of folate is the only form of folate shown to cross the blood-brain barrier, where it supports neurological health.† Healthy homocysteine levels are associated with cognitive health.†

Overall Health

Methyl Folate supports normal cell growth, cell division, and DNA formation.† It also supports the formation of healthy red blood cells.†

Alcohol interferes with folate absorption, so heavy drinkers risk folate deficiency. Diseases of malabsorption, including celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, increase folate deficiency risk. Gastric surgery diminishes gastric acid secretion, which can reduce folate absorption.

Adults take one (1) tablet daily or as directed by their health care professional.

Q:

I purchased Methyl Folate, and when I read the label, I saw: “Folate (as calcium methylfolate)”…my concern is that my cardiologist does not want me to have an increased intake of calcium, and in fact has me taking Vitamin K-2 as that helps to get the calcium into bones so it is not circulating and getting deposited in my heart vessels.  Should I return the Methyl Folate?

A:
  1. Calcium as a mineral vs. calcium as a counter-ion.
When people talk about possible heart health concerns with calcium supplements, they’re usually referring to large amounts of elemental calcium (like calcium carbonate or calcium citrate), which can raise serum calcium levels. Research has been mixed, with some studies suggesting possible cardiovascular risks from high-dose supplemental calcium, while others find no effect.

In contrast, calcium methylfolate contains only a tiny amount of calcium, just enough to stabilize the folate molecule. The active nutrient being supplemented is methylfolate, not calcium. The calcium contribution is negligible (usually less than 1% of the daily value), so it doesn’t pose the same potential cardiovascular concerns as dedicated calcium supplements.

  1. Safety of folate (methylfolate).
Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin, and methylfolate is its biologically active form. It’s generally considered safe at recommended doses. The upper limit (UL) set by the National Academies of Medicine applies to synthetic folic acid (1,000 mcg per day), not methylfolate specifically, but most supplements are well below this threshold.

  1. Bottom line. Talk with your cardiologist for confirmation.
  • If you’re avoiding high-dose calcium supplements for heart health reasons, that should not extend to calcium methylfolate.
  • The calcium in calcium methylfolate is present only in trace amounts and is not a meaningful source of calcium intake.

Folate supplementation (especially as methylfolate) is safe for most adults and may even be preferable for those with MTHFR variants.

Q:

Does it matter whether I take this supplement with or without food?

A:

Methylfolate is a water-soluble B vitamin, so it can be absorbed without food.† Many people prefer taking it in the morning, as B vitamins support energy metabolism† and may help you feel alert during the day.† Some individuals find it gentler on the stomach when taken with a meal, so you may choose to take it with food if needed.† Taking it at the same time each day can help support consistent nutrient intake.†

Q:

Does this product contain soy?

A:

No, Cooper Complete Methyl Folate supplement does not contain soy.

Q:

Are there medications that interact with Methyl Folate supplements?

A:

Yes. It’s important to talk with your healthcare provider about any supplements you take, including methylfolate. Certain medications—such as methotrexate (used for cancer and autoimmune conditions), antiepileptic drugs (like phenytoin, carbamazepine, and valproate), and sulfasalazine (used for ulcerative colitis)—may interact with folate in ways that affect how these medications work.

Q:

The supplement facts say DFE. What is DFE?

A:

DFE stands for Dietary Folate Equivalent. It is a standardized unit used on supplement labels to account for differences in the absorption of folate from food and folic acid from supplements. This helps provide a more accurate picture of total folate intake from all sources

Q:

Can I take this product if I am also taking Coumadin (warfarin)?

A:

If you are taking Coumadin (warfarin) or any other blood-thinning medication, you should consult your healthcare provider before adding any dietary supplement to your routine.

Q:

Why do you refer to Folate (Vitamin B9) as methyl folate rather than folic acid?

A:

Methylfolate is the biologically active form of folate (vitamin B9), whereas folic acid is a synthetic form that must be converted by the body before it can be used. Some individuals have genetic variations, such as in the MTHFR gene, that may reduce the efficiency of this conversion.†
